BBC Presenter 0 – HMRC 1

HMRC bought a case against Christa Ackroyd, a former Look North presenter, regarding employment status.

Christa worked through her personal service company, Christa Ackroyd Media (CAM), claiming that she was self-employed.

HMRC however challenged her self-employed status stating that the contract between CAM and the BBC prohibited her from working for any other body without the permission of the BBC. In addition, the BBC were expected to pay monthly fees to CAM.

It is thought that Christa Ackroyd lost her job over this, she owed over £400k for income tax and national insurance.
