The Government has pledged £5.5m to investigate and prosecute illegal money lenders in an attempt of put a stop to them preying on vulnerable households who struggle financially and have little or no alternative but to borrow money from such lenders.

Some of these money lenders, or loan sharks, have the most dreadful methods of forcing payment from their victims, including intimidation and violence.

In addition to these funds being made available for prosecution of these money lenders, there will also be provision for vulnerable people to get access to credit unions which  will help them get access to finance safely.
