Evictions can go ahead at the end of May

It has been confirmed by the Government that the ban on evictions, which was put in place because of the pandemic, will be lifted at the end of this month.

Eviction notice periods will be four months from 1 June.

This has been a balancing act for the Government as on one hand there has been a need to support tenants and on the other hand landlords who may have mortgages on their properties and rely on the rent to meet the repayments.

It has been reported that some half a million UK families are behind on their rent payments and the danger is that many of these families will find themselves homeless.

There has been a call from Generation Rent to the Government to create a ‘rent debt fund’ which could be accessible to tenants and landlords.
